Once you get past Detroit...

...Michigan is actually quite nice. Getting past Detroit is usually our goal, and last weekend, we achieved it. I recently discovered Marriott's discount program for travel agents, so I picked spots we could get to in a weekend, and spots where we could get said discount. This time Muskegon, Michigan won the lottery. What's in Muskegon? Let me tell you. In fact, let me show you:

It was really nice to find a vacant lot-there are so few in Toledo. I kid, but this was really our view from the hotel. Muskegon is a good spot to visit because it is centrally located to a handful of state parks/beach areas of Lake Michigan. As a side note, I learned (after the fact) that Harry Morgan of M*A*S*H fame grew up and graduated from high school in Muskegon.

I got off work a bit early on Friday, so we made it to our hotel while it was still light enough to enjoy the view. We walked the mall until it closed and we got some dinner. Side note: maybe if I got a job at Subway, I could opt to close 25 minutes early also. The guy didn't get away with it because some other people came in, but he looked ridiculous and those customers obviously had the munchies.

Saturday we visited Pere Marquette state park, which is about 20 minutes away from our hotel. The drive made me appreciate that our hotel was in a nice part of the city, and it reminded me that a body of water doesn't always=paradise; sorry Col. Potter. The park and lake was so beautiful! It was so incredibly cold, but I'm glad we were brave enough to walk around a bit.

After a visit to the beach, we went to Texas Roadhouse for lunch. I had pulled pork, Nate made an adventurous but unfortunate catfish decision. We ended up with plenty of leftovers but no place to store them, so this was the solution:

The next day on our way home we stopped in Grand Haven, Michigan; home of Grand Haven State Park. Sadly it was even more cold than the day before, but it was so pretty.

I bet it doesn't even look like it was starting to snow, does it?
